I just wanted to save recipes.

No app quite got it right. Sometimes it was the cookbook photo, sometimes the supermarket website. So I built one myself. You can have it too.

This is what a recipe looks like online.

Somewhere between cookie banners, life stories and frying-pan ads, there are six ingredients. Ricotta picks them out.

Ricotta is a one-person project. Does anyone outside our home need it? No idea. We use it to cook, and that’s enough for me.

What it does.

Bring it all.

A link, a screenshot, a photo or a page from Grandma’s cookbook. Check the draft, then save it.

Ask first. Read second.

Ricotta sends your source to OpenAI to extract the recipe. The app asks for your permission before the first import. You don’t need your own API key.

Your book.

Sign in with Apple. Recipes, folders, favourites and your shopping list live in your personal recipe book, available on each of your iPhones and offline too.

A little order.

Sort recipes into folders and mark your favourites. Find your Sunday dinner when Sunday comes.

Onto the list.

Add ingredients to your shopping list with a tap. Tick them off at the shop. Done.

With a picture.

Give each recipe a photo. If you stop liking it, swap it for another one.

Your recipe book meets ChatGPT and Claude.

If you like, connect your recipe book to ChatGPT or Claude. Ask about your own recipes there, without typing them out. The conversation happens in ChatGPT or Claude, outside Ricotta.

  • Only with your permission. Sign in with Apple and explicitly approve each connection.
  • Step by step. Searching and reading go together. Saving new recipes and editing existing ones each need separate permission.
  • With limits. An assistant cannot delete anything. It cannot see your shopping list, folders or favourites.
  • Revoke at any time. Take back a permission with a click.

The connection uses MCP, the Model Context Protocol. It’s an open standard that lets AI assistants access data you’ve approved. Your iPhone doesn’t need to be switched on. More in Help

It doesn’t always work.

  • Some websites block access. Try a screenshot instead.
  • A crooked photo may leave you with a line to correct.
  • Ricotta requires iOS 26 and Sign in with Apple. Extracting recipes needs an internet connection, with up to 10 imports a day. You can always enter recipes by hand.
  • The ChatGPT and Claude connection is still in beta and isn’t available to everyone yet.

If a recipe goes wrong, send it to me. That’s how imports get better.
